Probably one of the oldest European cities, Poltava is mostly known for its rich history (first founded during the eighth century). Its timelessness is definitely apparent in its architecture. It is also the home of the famous author, Nikolai Gogol, who perfectly encapsulated local village life in his collection of stories. So not only is the city a historical gem, but also a cultural one.
Incidentally, there are also loads of beautiful Ukraine ladies in the city, making it a perfect date destination. If you’re in the mood to take a Ukrainian woman out on a date in Poltova City, here are some of the city’s biggest attractions:
Lovely flowers? Check. Towering trees? Check. A well-designed landscape? Check. This is by far one of the most picturesque and romantic parks in Poltava. It wouldn’t be surprising to find a lot of couples strolling along the park’s pathways under the fine Poltova weather.
Here’s a little trivia: The actual name of the Park is actually Alexandrovsky Garden, named after Prince Alexei Kurakin who was Governor General of the province for a time. But once the park was in the possession of Petrovsky Poltava Cadet Corps, the park was then renamed Korpusny. The design greatly resembles that of St. Petersburg, making it one of the most beautiful parks in the city.
If you want to learn more about the city’s culture and history, then head to this museum. Founded by Vasily Dokuchaev, it is actually one of the oldest museums in Ukraine. It comprises several sections, namely the Nature Hall, Archaeology Hall, Ethnography Hall, Halls of History, and Treasury Hall.
But the museum’s most distinct feature would have to be its exterior. Built by architect V. Krychevsky, the design is a blend of modern Ukrainian style but adorned with traditional ornaments.
Built during the mid 17th century, this is the oldest church in the country. It has gone through several wars, fires, and undergone reparations. However, this church is best known for being the burial ground of Russian and Swedish soldiers during the Battle of Poltava.
The church was originally planned to be demolished. Through the intervention and decree of Emperor Oleksandr II, the church was eventually restored. The Tsar even allocated funds for the church’s upkeep. Some of the msot memorable attributes of the church include its brick bell tower, which is mostly intact.
Ever read about Eneyida? How about the play Natalka Poltavka? These works are done by the infamous Ivan Kotlyarevsky—the father of Ukrainian Literature. The reason he is revered is because his famous book was the first one in the country to be entirely published in the Ukrainian language. What’s even more significant was that he wrote the book during a time when the language was discouraged from being used in literature.
Because of his contribution, many people visit the author’s former home. You can find his residence behind the Uspenska Church.
By visiting these places, you’ll have a better understanding of Poltava. These places will give a glimpse to the city’s rich and storied heritage.
